STAND UP FOR WOMEN FLEEING VIOLENCE
Statement of NOW-NY President Sonia Ossorio

By rejecting the pleas of domestic violence victims seeking asylum, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is single-handedly eliminating more than two decades of progress on how we understand and address gender-based violence. With the advance of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, our country recognized violence against women as an issue of public urgency rather than a matter of so-called ‘private violence.’

We are putting women and their children in perilous danger. This is a heartless and inhumane policy that will result in lives lost.

This comes on the heels of the Trump Administration’s horrific policy of separating children from parents at the border. We must act NOW to stop this callous disregard for human suffering.

Take Action

Call Congress to Stop Separation of Children and Parents

Your voice can help put an end to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) cruel and needless practice of tearing apart immigrant families. DHS has responded to pressure in the past. Now we need to make sure our members of Congress take action to end this cruel practice once and for all.

Contact your congressional leaders. Find them here.

Here is a script you can use:

“Hi, my name is _____ and I reside in ______. I’m urging Senator/Representative ______ to denounce Trump’s family separation policy and use all of Congress’ authority to stop it. I urge you to support Senator Feinstein’s bill, the Keep Families Together Act, S. 3036, and insist that the practice of separating children from their families at the border stop immediately.”

A plea for some help at the Newport Homeless Services Center

From Traci Flowers (who is in the hospital trying to get well)…

Friends I need some help! I missed a whole week at the shelter last week and I will miss at least Monday this week due to my extended hospital stay. The Center needs of a few people who are willing to volunteer even if only for an hour or so. I have two volunteers that run the shelter with me daily and they can show you exactly what to do. Even if you can only be there for an hour and it’s just to sit and have a cup of coffee with someone or let them talk, it makes a big difference in the way people feel and the success of the center. Of course there are jobs to be done as well if you are up for one of those like passing out food from the kitchen or helping somebody on a computer.

If any of you are able to help please text me or call me at 541.270.8447.
