STAND UP FOR WOMEN FLEEING VIOLENCE
Statement of NOW-NY President Sonia Ossorio
By rejecting the pleas of domestic violence victims seeking asylum, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is single-handedly eliminating more than two decades of progress on how we understand and address gender-based violence. With the advance of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, our country recognized violence against women as an issue of public urgency rather than a matter of so-called ‘private violence.’
We are putting women and their children in perilous danger. This is a heartless and inhumane policy that will result in lives lost.
This comes on the heels of the Trump Administration’s horrific policy of separating children from parents at the border. We must act NOW to stop this callous disregard for human suffering.
Call Congress to Stop Separation of Children and Parents
Your voice can help put an end to the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) cruel and needless practice of tearing apart immigrant families. DHS has responded to pressure in the past. Now we need to make sure our members of Congress take action to end this cruel practice once and for all.
